Clinique Beauty Box

The excitement bubbled away inside me when Latest In Beauty’s email hit my inbox last week; The British Beauty Blogger Clinique Edit II is here it exclaimed & my fingers were twitching to get clicking. There was no way I was missing out on this box. The contents looked far too good. I didn’t want to feel annoyed at myself for missing out on yet another sell out beauty must have so as soon as I could I ferociously tapped away on the laptop & secured my box.

If you’ve used Clinique before then you’ll know why I was so eager to get my hands on one of these boxes. Clinique use science to bring us innovative products that deliver results fast. They are famous for their 3 step skincare systems which have different formulations for different skin types. The 3 step system was created in 1968 and it was the first ever dermatologist created, allergy tested, 100% fragrance free collection of beauty products ever marketed. The 3 step system is a daily cleansing, toning, exfoliating & moisturising regime & this Clinique box contains products from this range.

This is what my beautiful Clinique box contained:

  • Full Size Chubby Lash Fattening Mascara in Jumbo Jet (black)
  • Dramatically Different Moisturising Lotion + (very dry to dry combination) (15ml)
  •   Liquid Facial Soap (Mild) (30ml)
  • Superprimer Universal Face Primer (15ml)
  • Take The Day Off Remover For Lids, Lashes & Lips (30ml)
  • Full Size Sweet Pots Sugar Scrub & Lip Balm in Red Velvet
  • Aromatics in Black Fragrance (4ml)
  • Clinique For Men Face Scrub (15ml)
  • £10 off voucher & invitation for a free sample of foundation

I’ll start off with one of my favourites: Superprimer Universal Face Primer. I liked this product so much that I used my £10 off voucher to purchase it from the Clinique website. I’m a huge advocate of using a primer under your makeup as I really believe it makes your makeup last so much longer. If you don’t use a primer already then this is a great one to start with as it covers all bases. After applying this product my skin felt much softer & smoother plus my foundation looked fresher for longer as well as lasting longer. This primer is oil free, lightweight and colour correcting. In the Superprimer range there are also primers that target specific skin concerns such as redness & dull skin. I opted for the anti redness Superprimer as I suffer with rosacea. As I was so impressed with this universal Superprimer I really can’t wait for my full size anti redness Superprimer to arrive. I’ll let you know how I get on with it & if it helps with my rosacea.

Another one of my favourite products in the box was the Sweet Pots Sugar Scrub & Lip Balm in Red Velvet. Sweet pots contain a lip scrub & lip balm conveniently in one pot so that you can exfoliate your lips before applying a hit of sheer colour. I’m rather shy when it comes to red lipstick but I love this shade because it has a hint of red without being too loud & it suits all skin tones. I found that the lip scrub wasn’t as exfoliating as some lip scrubs that I’ve used before but it did definitely make a difference. My lips felt much softer & smoother after using the scrub plus using the lip balm straight after the scrub delivers an extra hit of moisturisation as well as a slick of sheer red colour. Pretty sweet!

I’m a mascara junkie so I was thrilled to discover a full size mascara that I hadn’t tried inside my box. The Chubby Lash Fattening Mascara is a great all rounder. I’m very impressed with this mascara. The wand is great for ensuring no nasty clumps make their way onto your pretty lashes. It’s a jet black shade so it really will make your lashes take centre stage. The oversized volumising wand takes your lashes from fine & faint to bodacious and bold. I found the rich colour was easy to build upon so it was easy to get the look I wanted, whether that was a big dramatic look or just a pretty daytime flutter. This mascara is ophthalmologist Tested & allergy Tested plus as with all Clinique products it’s 100% Fragrance Free.

On the left are my lashes with the Clinique Chubby Lash Fattening Mascara on and on the right are my bare lashes just so you can see the difference

Moisturising is an essential part of any beauty regime no matter what skin type you have. The Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturising Lotion + is one of the brands most popular products & has won awards including the UK’s number 1 moisturising brand. It’s become a cult product in recent years with beauty editors, bloggers & customers alike going crazy for it. As I have combination skin the sample I received would probably be better suited to a dry skin type but the lotion was great for the dry areas on my cheeks & neck. I’ve used this product many times before & actually own the full size product in the combination/oily version. I love this product. It really does live up to the hype. It tackles dry areas quickly leaving a matte smooth & soft finish. Skin feels so much softer & springy plus looks smoother & glowing after application. This new formula helps strengthen skin’s own moisture barrier so more moisture stays in.

If I had to pick one step I’d say that cleansing is the most important part of your regime. It should be done twice a day (morning & evening) to keep skin in tip top condition & keep those pesky spots at bay. Clinique’s Liquid Facial Soap Mild is gentle enough for even the most sensitive skin types. I have very sensitive skin & suffer from rosacea and I found this cleanser was fine for my skin. It’s 100% fragrance free so it won’t cause your skin to flare up. The texture is very similar to liquid hand soap and this is one of the reasons that it’s not my favourite cleanser. Don’t get me wrong I do really like it but I think I must prefer a creamy or thicker texture in a cleanser such as Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish, Bee Good Honey & Propolis 2-in-1 Cream Cleanser or Clinique Redness Solutions Soothing Cleanser. One of the great things about this cleanser is that it’s mild enough to be non-stripping and leave skin lipids intact.

Take The Day Off Makeup Remover For Lids, Lashes & Lips is another iconic product from Clinique. It’s especially useful for removing waterproof makeup such as mascara, eyeliner or lip stains. The formula loosens long wearing makeup in a way other removers cant, leaving you to gently swipe the makeup away with a cotton pad. It’s suitable for contact lens wearers too. I found this product did exactly what it said on the bottle. It removed all of my makeup without any trouble, even stubborn mascara that normally leaves me with panda eyes (not a good look!) It’s a great size bottle too, perfect for weekends away. It feels a bit greasy when you first apply it but don’t worry the formula dries quickly without that sticky feel.

Now I come onto the fragrance in the box Aromatics in Black. It has a deep fruity floral scent with a kick of spice that makes it perfect for nights out & sophisticated occasions. It’s definitely the perfect companion to an LBD (little black dress) & some sparkling jewels. It’s a great size to pop in your clutch too. While I really love the scent I can’t say I think too much of the packaging. The packaging is far too simple & boring for a high end perfume in my opinion. Some may like the simple look but I like my perfume bottles & boxes to be eye catching & a bit different from all the other hoards of fragrance on the market. Put it this way I’d have never looked twice at it in a shop but I’d have missed out on such a gorgeous scent. The scent is not very sweet at all it’s a much darker smell. Very elegant & would suit all ages. Love the scent but boring packaging.

The final product in the collection is Clinique For Men Face Scrub. My partner hasn’t started sampling this product yet but I’ve had a play with it and I’ve found that as it only has a slight minty smell there’s nothing to stop us girls from using it too. It’s a really great exfoliant and you can instantly see the difference after just one use. The scent of the product makes you feel refreshed and wide awake. It makes a great little treat for your man plus you’ll notice the benefits on his skin too! Win win.

Overall I’d say this is one of the best beauty boxes I’ve ever bought as every single product in this box was of some use to me & I really liked them all. The box cost £20 and I bought it from but unfortunately they all sold out pretty much straight away but you can sign up to their emails or keep an eye on the website as new boxes are launched all the time & as this box has been so successful I imagine they’ll probably do another edit. These products are also available individually from

Urban Decay Naked Smoky, Primer Potion & Setting Spray

Urban Decay’s Naked Smoky eye palette must have been one of the most lusted after beauty products of the year. There were countless email sign up lists to get it first but any early stock sold out within minutes. A big buzz was created by the help of many beauty bloggers & the online sellers themselves and it’s safe to say their efforts paid off as we were all desperate to get our mitts on one!

I have had my palette for a little while now & I’ve loved using it. There are twelve shades in total and they glide on smoothly & evenly onto the eyelid. Nine of those colours have never been released by Urban Decay (UD) before and the other three are exclusive to the Naked Smoky palette. This palette allows you to experiment with warm bronze shades, dimensional greys, rich browns & deep blacks plus there’s a mixture of matte, satin & sparkle textures. A dual ended brush is included with the palette; the first end is a soft fluffy brush that’s great for applying the eyeshadow all over the lids and the other end is great for more detailed things such as lining the eyes. It’s really great to use an eye palette that comes with a good useable brush for once! Too many eye palettes provide cheap brushes that simply can’t do the job, whereas this one is perfect! As the palette is quite long this means the mirror is pretty big so it’s also ideal to use when applying other make-up such as foundation. I really like the packaging & I like that it fits into the theme of “smoky”. The front of the palette has a background of lighter & darker grey smoke with the palette name & brand name in 3D silver writing. I wouldn’t say this palette is ideal for travelling as it’s quite big and not the lightest but that’s the price you pay to have a wider selection of good quality eye shadows. The colours are also flattering on all skin tones, even very light skin tones like mine. I’ve really been enjoying experimenting with different looks with this palette & I know I’m going to get a lot of use out of it as I’ve found shades that are perfect for many different occasions. I love! The Naked Smoky palette is priced at £38 & available from or

Before applying any eye shadow prime the eyelids with UD’s Eyeshadow Primer Potion in original. It’s long lasting & makes sure your eyeshadow stays put. After using this product I didn’t need to top up my eyeshadow before going out in the evening. It lasted all day from desk to bar. The brush built into the lid of the primer potion makes application onto the eyelids easy peasy. The creamy parben-free formula doesn’t dry the skin out either! Urban Decay’s Eyeshadow Primer Postion is priced at £16 & available from the same websites as above.

There’s nothing more annoying than spending ages perfecting your make-up to have it fade away or rub off within a matter of hours. Sometimes even the best quality make-up has trouble surviving through our typical British weather conditions (as we do too. It can be a nightmare knowing what to wear in the mornings as one minute it can be hot & sunny then the next it’s tipping it down!)…Anyway as I was saying many different weather conditions can take its toll on our make-up (and hair) so when I discovered setting sprays I was delighted. A setting spray can be used as a primer under make-up or you can spray it on after make-up to keep it in place all day. I tend to use a creamy long lasting primer as a base then I spray a setting spray once I’ve completed my face. This Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray is oil-free, parben-free & has patented temperature control technology which works to lower the temperature of the skin, even in hot & humid conditions to keep all your make-up in place for up to 16 hours. Personally I’ve found that this setting spray has made a great difference in my make-up’s staying power & it’s great to mist over the face when your hot as it won’t ruin your make-up either. UD’s All Nighter Make-Up Setting Spray is priced at £21 for 118ml and available from the websites mentioned above.
